Title: Airway Dentistry- A New Paradigm
Abstract:
Upper airway obstruction tends to alter breathing. This can have a significant impact on the normal development of craniofacial structures, leading to deficiency in maxillary growth, backward rotation of the mandible, pathologies such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and can also affect the normal growth & development. At this juncture, the concept of ‘Airway Dentistry’ has taken shape with the aim of exploring methods to prevent, the restriction of the air way in a natural and permanent way. Incidentally, the ENT specialists also work to attain the same goal.

Even though; decades ago, ENT specialists such as Crawford (1937) and Fowler (1947) suggested that they should work together with the orthodontists to benefit patients with “Stuffy Noses, Long Faces and Dental Malocclusion”, this concept has not been recognized adequately so far.

Skeletal Class II malocclusions due to the clockwise rotation of the mandible can be linked often to airway obstruction. In such cases the air way obstruction needs to be detected and eliminated to prevent the relapse, using functional, orthopaedic or combination appliances.

The purpose of this lecture includes- detection of air way obstruction at the first glance, assessing the diagnostic aids, methods to improve air way patency. The lecture also aims to point out what an orthodontist can offer the ENT specialists in his task of correcting air way obstructions and finally the concept of ‘Air way Dentistry’.
