Title: Renewable Energy from Residual Biomass in Saudi Arabia
Abstract:
The interest in using biomass as a clean and renewable energy source has increased in the recent years, thus, biomass utilization for energy production is important from an energetic as well as an environmental viewpoint. Saudi Arabia ca considered as one of the major biomass producing countries, where a huge amount of biomass wastes such as municipal solid wastes, agriculture residues, and sewage wastes are produced annually. Thus, the goal of this study is to estimate the potential of biomass wastes, their potential and electric energy, moreover, its contribution to reduce the greenhouse gasses in Saudi Arabia. The results showed that the total amount of biomass wastes produced annually in Saudi Arabia is around 31.5 million ton. This amount has a total energy potential of 260 PJ, which can generate about 15TWh of electric energy by using different biochemical and thermochemical processes. This amount of electric energy could provide 5% of the currently total electricity consumption (315 TWh). Even though the electricity production cover the electricity consumed in the kingdom, but the contribution of the biomass energy can reduce the fossil fuel consumed to generate the electricity, in consequence, reduce GHG emissions and fight the climate change. Thus, these findings can support decision-makers in developing strategies for the sustainability usage of biomass to achieve the vision 2030 and the sustainable development in the Saudi Arabia.
